Benjamin (Ben) L. Hadley, 96, of Atikokan, Ont., passed away at the Atikokan General Hospital on Tuesday, May 9, 2000.
He was born Dec. 8, 1903 in Chapple Township to Ben W. and Rachel Hadley. He lived most of his life on his farm north of Barwick before moving to Atikokan in 1987.
Ben worked as a farmer, logger, and sectionman for the C.N.R. until his retirement in 1968. He served in local politics in Chapple for many years–as municipal assessor, member of the local school board, chairman of Chapple Telephone System, welfare officer, one term as councillor, and 36 years as Reeve of Chapple, from which office he retired in 1976.
On March 15, 1933, Ben was married to Lila Shannon and raised a family of eight children.
Surviving are his children, Bruce (Karen) Hadley of Trail, B.C., Phyllis (Charles) Kivari of Atikokan, Dell Nickel of Dryden, June (Lyle) Wheatley of Barwick, Lynne (Dick) Johnson of Houston, B.C., Rilla (Bert) Race of Barwick, Glenda Hadley of Atikokan, and Grant (Sue) Hadley of Napanee, Ont.
Ben also is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Clink in Emo Hospital and Mrs. Mary Crowe in Rainycrest; 26 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by wife, Lila in June, 1984; and one sister, Mrs. Anna Horley in 1954.
Funeral services were held at Barwick Community Centre on Friday, May 12, 2000 at 1 p.m., with interment in Chapple Cemetery.
