ART CARPENTER

Art Carpenter, 67, passed away Friday, June 16, 2017, surrounded by his family, after a long, brave battle with cancer.
Born in Fort Frances, Ont. on Nov. 23, 1949 to Richard and Elizabeth Carpenter, Art was the youngest of six children. He grew up in the north end of town on Victoria Avenue.
Completing his education in Rochester, Mn., Art graduated from Mayo High School in June, 1969 with a full hockey scholarship to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
He married his sweetheart, Janice Hogan, on July 24, 1970.
As a young adult, and with a young family at home, Art worked for a stint on “The Hallett,” now a Fort Frances Museum piece at the Sorting Gap Mrina, that used to be a working logging tug.
Art was very involved in the local sports scene, amassing an impressive collection of trophies in hockey, softball, and racquetball while gracing many local sports page articles.
Art and (extended) family enjoyed a relocation to the coast of British Columbia in the late 1970s, meeting up with long-lost distant relatives for a time, before settling back in Fort Frances in the early 1980s.
In 1985, Art obtained his apprenticeship in the carpentry course at Confederation College in Thunder Bay. After an impressive 30+ year career in construction, Art’s rock-solid craftsmanship lives on in literally hundreds of homes and structures in the area.
In his working years, as well as retirement, Art took full advantage of the area in which he grew up, fishing, hunting, and camping on Rainy Lake. Art’s love of golf, music, and fellowship, his amazing work ethic, and a sense of family live on in those who sought and shared his company through the years.
Art was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Elizabeth Carpenter; sister, Doris (Stan) Brown; brother, Dennis Carpenter; and sister, Elaine (Jack) Hogan.
He is survived by his brother, Richard (Mary) Carpenter and sister, Beatrice (Erwin) Armstrong; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Art will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Janice; sons, Eric (Melissa) Carpenter and Gabe (Tara) Carpenter; and his beautiful granddaughters, Sydney, Jamie, Sophie, and Lucie.
At Art’s request, there will be no funeral service.
If desired, in memoriam donations may be made to Tamarack Lodge in Thunder Bay, Ont. c/o the Northridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 89, Emo, Ont., P0W 1E0.
