Joseph James Arthur (“Art”) Benedict Albert, 91, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015.
He was born Jan. 29, 1924 in Espanola, Ont.
Joining the tank corps in 1942 at age 18, illness prevented overseas deployment. He transferred to the medical corps and finished his service at POW Camp 100 in Neys, Ont. in charge of the hospital.
After WWII, he worked for LCBO and also had his own band, the Hometown Serenaders, which played Saturday nights on CKFI (Fort Frances).
In 1951, Art met Shirley and they married in 1953. Art and Shirley owned Art’s Studio, afterwards managing the Bull Moose Lodge over several years.
Later, moving to Thunder Bay, Art worked for Buset Brothers Construction and also owned/operated Fat Albert’s Pizza with Shirley.
The family then moved to Upsala, Ont., where Art worked at TransCanada Pipelines until retirement at 65.
After retiring, Art worked as a carpenter and maintenance man at Thunder Bird Resort, until health issues forced him to slow down.
Art is survived by his wife, Shirley; three sisters, Olive Hache, Arvella Maxwell, and Roylene Baduik; five children, David (Chris) Albert, Suzanne Albert, Lori Ann (Ian) Jarvis, Billie Kay (Jake) Shonosky, and Robin Albert; and numerous grandchildren.
A man of many talents, Shirley always said, “My honey can do anything!”—and he fulfilled that in every way.
Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of life will be held Jan, 30, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the community centre in Upsala.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Northern Cancer Fund.
