Archie Potson Sr., 55, of Seine River First Nation, Ont., passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at his residence in Seine River First Nation.
He was born May 4, 1947 at Mudge’s Camp in Seine River First Nation to the late Jack and Irene Potson.
Archie grew up in the Rainy River District, and worked as a guide, trapper, and logger for many years in the area. He also owned and operated the (Wild Rice Business Industry) for several years.
In past years, he held the position of First Nation O.P.P. Commissioner for Treaty 3 and chief of Seine River First Nation.
For pastime, he enjoyed travelling extensively whenever possible and spending time with his grandchildren.
Archie will be missed by his wife, Geraldine Potson, of Seine River First Nation, Ont.; five sons, Ryan Potson, Terry Potson, Jeremy Potson and Joanie, Archie Potson Jr., and Christopher Spencer, all of Seine River First Nation, Ont.; two daughters, Lisa Potson and Leanne Potson, both of Seine River First Nation, Ont.; and two grandchildren, Janet Spoon and Jeremiah Potson.
Also surviving are three brothers, Jim Banks of Stanjikoming First Nation, Ont., Bill Morrison of Nicickousemenecaning First Nation, Ont., and George Potson of Fort Frances, Ont.; one sister, Nancy Jones of Nicickousemenecaning First Nation, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Irene; one brother, Sonny; two sisters, Mary and Rose; and one daughter.
A traditional burial service was held Sunday, March 30, 2003 in the morning at the family residence in Seine River First Nation. Elder Gilbert Smith officiated, with interment in Seine River First Nation Cemetery in Seine River First Nation.
A wake was held Saturday evening at the family residence in Seine River First Nation.
Pallbearers were Bob Potson, Walden Spencer, Vernon Menson, Ken Morrison, Stacy Kabatay, Gerald Johnson, Jonathan Potson, Randy Kabatay, John Spoon Jr., Lance Kabatay, and Clarence Johnson.
Honourary pallbearers were Richard Trivers, Nancy Jones, Dean Bruyere, George Spencer, and Hat Morrison.
