Annie Serena Mathews, 96, of 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 at her residence.
Auntie was born Oct. 20, 1913 in Brandon, Man. to the late Walter and Eva Avis. She moved to Fort Frances in 1924, where she had resided since.
Annie worked as a nurse at Dr. McKenzie’s Hospital in Fort Frances for many years until her retirement.
On Dec. 15, 1937, she was united in marriage to Leslie Mathews.
She was a longtime member of St. John’s Anglican Church in Fort Frances. Auntie Annie was always there as a caregiver to all her family and friends, and she will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her two brothers, Walter Avis and wife, Shirley, and Brian Avis and wife, Mona, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie Mathews in 1990; three brothers, Sid, Percy, and Allan Avis; and one sister, Nona Tierney.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church in Fort Frances.
Rev. William Giovetti and Rev. Barbara Murray officiated, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Friends visited with family on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
The pallbearers were Jim Avis, Guy Avis, Ken Avis, Don Angus, Leonard Hill, and Dr. Barry Anderson.
