Fern Pochailo, of 960 First St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away suddenly at the age of 92 on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011 in Winnipeg, Man.
She was born Aug. 25, 1919 in Fort Frances to the late Oscar and Amy Palm.
In 1942, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Port Arthur General Hospital nursing program, and was employed at the Emo Red Cross Hospital and the Fort Frances paper mill.
On Aug. 15, 1948, Fern was united in marriage to Frank Pochailo, and they resided in Fort Frances throughout their life together.
Fern’s family and friends were very important to her. She especially loved and cherished each moment shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Knox United Church, UCW Unit #6, Hospital Auxiliary, Vasa Lodge, Scandinavian Club, and Red Wing Rebekah Lodge. She also enjoyed many activities, including playing bridge and cribbage, and valued her weekly coffee and Friday night dinners with her very special friends.
Fern is survived by one son, Jim (Lori) Pochailo, and daughters, Linda (Jim) MacDonald and Barbara Kircher, all of Fort Frances, Ont,; grandchildren, Christina (Chris) Green, Frank (Kristy) Pochailo, Nicole (Matt) Bowering, James (Kristyn) Asplund, and Ross Kircher; and great-grandchildren, Casey and Kyle Green, Cadence and Alice Bowering.
Also surviving are her nephew, Lenard (Joanna) McQuarrie; brother-in-law, Phillip (Julie) Pochailo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and Donna Lowey, her “special other daughter.”
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Pochailo; daughter, Janet and husband, Greg Asplund; granddaughter, Lauren Asplund; and sister, Florence McQuarrie.
Family and friends visited Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances, with Rev. Barbara Miller officiating.
Cremation followed, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
The pallbearers were James Asplund, Frank Pochailo, Ross Kircher, Chris Green, Bill Pochailo, and Bob Pochailo.
The honourary pallbearers were Fern’s Knox United Church community and her Rebekah sisters.
