ALICE DOROTHY FINCH

After a lengthy struggle with physical pain and illness, our mother and friend, Dorothy Finch (also known as Dot, Auntie Dot, Grandma, GG, and Mom), went to Heaven just after midnight on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011.
She had been living at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont.
Dorothy was born May 30, 1925, the second child of five born to Richard and Nellie DeVall of Barnhart. Dorothy spent most of her life in the Emo, Ont. area.
On Feb. 4, 1947, Dorothy married Jim Finch and they farmed in Rainy River District for 19 years. They also spent time living in Atikokan and Ignace, but they returned to Emo.
Dorothy and Jim recently recognized 64 years of marriage together.
Dorothy’s greatest delight was children. She provided child care and love to many children—and many children came home from the hospital wearing a sweater knitted by Dorothy.
Her door was always open. Dorothy loved people and she collected many families as her own.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Jim, of Fort Frances, Ont.; her three daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Norman Cain of Devlin, Ont., Jacqui and Erik Thingstad of Ignace, Ont, and Anne Finch and Jim Parry-Hill of Gretna, Man.; and her sister, Bertha (Tom) Chupa of Florida.
She was so proud of her grandchildren, Nicole Cain of Fort Frances, Ont., Crystal Cain of Winnipeg, Man., Paul Thingstad of Winnipeg, Man., Stephanie Thingstad of Ear Falls, Ont., and Roseanna and Will Southcombe of Brandon, Man.
She also was thrilled to have two great-grandchildren, Liam and Zachary Southcombe of Brandon, Man.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; sister, Mary Sollen; brother, Dick DeVall; and sister, Nellie Mudry.
A memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, with Rev. Frances Flook officiating.
A reception followed at the funeral home.
Interment will be held at a later date.
