ALFRED (SNICKER) GEORGE VERAN

ALFRED (SNICKER) GEORGE VERAN
Alfred George Veran Sr. passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007 at the Atikokan General Hospital in Atikokan, Ont.
Alfred was born on Couchiching Reserve on March 10, 1914. He was born at Snicker’s Point, and he always said he didn’t know if he was named for the point or the point was named for him.
Alfred started work in 1928 when he was 14 years old for Shevlin Clark in the bush, then he worked for various construction companies. Alfred also fished commercially in the Rainy Lake area for a few years.
In 1936, he married the love of his life, Mary Fyle, and together they raised eight children. In 1947, they moved to Sapawe, Ont., where he worked for J.A. Mathieu as a timber cruiser, bush worker, and river driver.
They lived in Sapawe and watched their children grow up until her death in 1956.
In 1958, Alfred moved to Atikokan and worked for George Armstrong. He later moved to Perch Lake, then to Glenorchy, where he worked for Pearsons. Alfred then moved to Grassy Portage with his longtime companion, Marjorie Morrisseau, where he spent the rest of his working life.
He worked his trapline there until he moved to Green Manor in Fort Frances, Ont. He went into semi retirement, but still stayed active with his tugboat and his sawmill at Grassy Portage.
Alfred worked hard all his life until he was 87.
In 2002, he moved to Atikokan to be closer to his family. He liked nothing better than to sit and reminisce with his sons and to visit with his family, and he could tell a great story.
Alfred leaves behind seven children, Alfred (Marie) Veran Jr., Deloris Veran, Sandy Sedor, Alverne Dickson, Sharon Veran, Joe Veran, and Jack (Evelyn) Veran, and daughter-in-law, Beverly Veran, all of Atikokan, Ont.
He also leaves behind 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.
Alfred was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Marie Veran; wife, Mary;
daughter, Marie; and son, Ray.
He also was predeceased by his sisters, Ruby Storey, Lily Miner, and Marie Klyne; brothers, Albert, Ernest, and Roy Veran; grandchildren, Lonnie Goodman, Mark Goodman, Robert Veran, Patrick Veran, and Richard Goodman; and great-granddaughter, Rachel Hanson.
Services were held Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church on Couchiching Reserve.
Honorary pallbearers were Herb George, Joe George, Wayne George, Jimmy George, Brad George, Bobby George, Dempsy Calder, and Pete Bruyere.
Alfred will be interred at a later date beside his wife, Mary.
