ALAN LOWE

Alan Lowe, 95, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014, with family by his side, at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Alan was born in Cobourg, Ont. on Feb. 25, 1919 to George Lowe and Jessie Diack.
A well-educated man, he attended the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, Ont. and obtained a degree in Agriculture. He later joined the Royal Canadian Air Fore as a radar mechanic and was shipped to England, where he served for three-and-a-half years.
In 1945, Al taught veterans of the R.C.A.F. in Hamilton, Ont. The following year, he became an assistant professor of physics at the University of New Brunswick.
In 1946, he married Katherine Wagner and became a loving father to son, Alan Jr., and daughter, Sally.
In 1949, Al obtained his Master’s degree in physics from Western University in London. Following a short stint as a professor, he rejoined the Royal Canada Air Force in Halifax, N.S., where he held many high-ranking positions for the next 10 years.
From 1960-62, Al taught physics at Clinton High School. In 1962, the family moved to Fort Frances, where Al taught physics at FFHS for 21 years. He also held the positions of Science Department head and vice-principal.
Al also served as a councillor for the Town of Fort Frances, plus served on many boards and committees.
In 1980, his wife, Kay, passed away after a long struggle with cancer.
In 1981, Al met Chris Lovisa and they were married on Oct. 10 of that year, acquiring five additional children (three married, one almost married, and a 16-year-old daughter) plus two grandchildren. What a brave man!
Al served two terms as reeve of the Township of Alberton (Crozier). He also was active on teacher federation boards, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Rainy Lake Conservancy, and wrote articles on Nature and Science for four newspapers for about 30 years.
Alan leaves to mourn his wife, Chris; daughter, Sally (Dale Burlington); stepchildren, Karen (Dave) Egan, Don (Cheryl) Lovisa, Diane (Paul) Noonan, David (Carla) Lovisa, and Barb (Claude) Jodoin; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was dearly loved by all who knew him.
Al was predeceased by his son, Alan Jr.; his parents; and three half-brothers.
Al was very proud of his Scottish background. He played bagpipes for many years and, given a Scotch or two, would proudly reveal what he wore under his kilt.
With fond memories and a life well-lived, fill your glass with Scotch and raise a toast to the man we all love.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 11 a.m at the church he loved—Knox United.
The honourary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

He will be dearly missed.
