It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin, Adeline I. Mattison, on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 at the Rainy River Health Centre in Rainy River, Ont.
Adeline was born July 23, 1919 in Rainy River to Charles and Bertha Hendrickson. She and her twin sister were the oldest of eight siblings.
In 1954, she married her good friend and neighbour, Peter Mattison, and they settled down at Wilson Creek directly across the creek from where she had spent most of her life. She remained a loyal and faithful wife until Pete’s passing in 1986 at 95 years of age, and lived there until her own passing.
Adeline loved to have her children, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, in-laws, and many friends show up at her house for coffee. The last few years, she continued to be an early-riser so the coffee was ready for her nephew, Richard, or anyone who arrived in the morning.
Adeline was an avid gardener all her life and also enjoyed fishing, walking through the bush, hunting, skidooing, and, in her younger years, helping on the trapline with her brothers.
She also took great pride in the fact she still could drive and shop for herself and her brother and was, in fact, shopping the day she entered the hospital.
She also tried not to miss her enjoyable church meetings at the McInnes Creek Chapel.
Adeline is survived by her daughter, Irene (Harry) Gerula of Pinewood, Ont.; two sons, Ronald (Jean) Hendrickson and Archie (Yvonne) Hendrickson, both of Edmonton, Alta.; sister, Mildred Roadhouse of Mission, B.C.; brothers, Arvid Hendrickson of Wilson Creek, and Richard (Marlene) Hendrickson of Edmonton, Alta; sister-in-law, Phyllis Hendrickson of Prince Rupert, B.C., eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Adeline was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Bertha Hendrickson; twin sister, Elvina Drennan; brothers, Norman Hendrickson, Melvin and Willmar Hendrickson; and brother-in-law, Ercell Roadhouse.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 4, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Knox United Church in Rainy River, with Pastor Pat White officiating. Interment in the McInnes Creek Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dennis Olinyk, Bob Locking, Gerry Gignac, Jack Drennan, Roy Stigen, and Darryl Swanson.
Honourary pallbearers were Bonnie Irvine, Irene Neddo, Vivian Locking, Rose Johnson, Carol Jensson, Helen Olson, Marilyn Olson, and Marg Lalois.
Should family and friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to the McInnes Creek Church c/o Vivian Locking, Box 513, Rainy River, Ont., P0W 1L0 or the Rainy River Health Centre Box 236, Rainy River, Ont., P0W 1L0.
People find their happiness
In many different ways
Some find it in success or wealth
In pleasure or in praise.
But you were a special person
For you found yours all life through
In the joy you gave to others
By the thoughtful things you’d do.
And since you gave such happiness
To all those lives you touched,
It’s no wonder you were so dear to us
And we loved you—oh so much.
