ADELIA MARIE GUBA

Adelia Marie (Nelson) Guba, 87, of Emo, finally had enough of Cancer, she said “I am tired.” She passed away peacefully December 26, 2021, with family by her side. She was born premature on a wintry day, January 14, 1934, on the family farm, in Myhre Township near Williams, only daughter to Elmer Loyd and Adelia Maranda (Holton) Nelson. They kept her warm on the oven door wrapped in a blanket. She grew up tough and stubborn to win.

Mom said she did not remember much about her mother, Adelia Maranda who had passed away February 8, 1940, leaving her with her brothers Marvin and George. They moved in with their maternal grandparents George and Grace Hartnell.

Adelia attended school in Williams, where she graduated from in 1951. She liked to play volleyball, basketball and hockey. It was on the skating rink where she met her husband to be, Milton Samuel Guba. Her friends wanted to know who he was, so she accidentally ran into him to get his name. He was working in Williams for the railroad. They were married June 14, 1952, in Bethany Lutheran Church. They lived where ever the railroad sent him, Redditt, Red Lake Road and Minaki. She got tired of moving, so she bought a house in Emo, it was home to us. We did make many trips to Williams so she could be with her many relatives.

Adelia worked at Cloverleaf Grocery, downtown Emo, for 32 years, making many friends and loyal customers. Mom was a long time member of the Emo Legion Ladies Auxilary, helping in the kitchen and selling 50/50 tickets. She loved curling, either on the ice or watching her favourite teams. Crocheting and knitting was her passion, quilting was a close second, making quilts for family. The Baptist Church Mission benefited with over 500 afghans made by her for those in Guatemala, Northern Canada, and Ukraine. Mom loved to play cards, especially crib, then it was bingo. She enjoyed sea cruises around the world, last one in 2019. Adelia was Emo’s Senior Citizen of the Year 2012.
