You can’t eat money

Andrew Szell

Dear editor:
In these troubled times of a crumbling economy, job losses, and financial woes, there is much finger-pointing going on and no shortage of “expert” advice or explanation from the so-called experts.
If an alien would observe our society, he/she/it quickly would see that everything is revolving around “money.”
Money is supposed to be the medium for exchange that bridges the gap between two dissimilar elements—and it can be anything from salt to gold! Money bridges the gap between a dozen eggs and a loaf of bread.
For many many years, money was able to do its job what it was designed for. To be a “mediator” in commerce.
Money was designed to be a vehicle for exchange. As any vehicle or medium, it has to “move,” it has to be “liquid,” in order to do its job and if it doesn’t move anymore, the entire financial system “plugs up.”
Everybody is familiar with constipation, I’m sure, and that is what’s happening in the economic world today.
For too many years, many individuals (the ones with high-paying jobs) started to hold back (a.k.a. hoard) their money. There is nothing wrong with some saving of money if you are able to, but it very easily can turn into hoarding money. Money is “buying power” that is guaranteed by the government, therefore, it should be used as such and not to be stuffed into mattresses or safety deposit boxes.
Financial institutions in the past tried to compensate for this “plugging” trend by encouraging people to live beyond their means and borrow money, which was the wrong thing to do but gave a temporary solution/circulation. Inflation also is a subtle tool to encourage the circulation of money and not to bury it in the back yard.
Unfortunately, the “hoarders” started to hoard even more and refused to circulate their money.
Because of this insanity of hoarding, the money lost its edge and became a commodity instead of a vehicle for exchange. This is the point in any individual when “the love of money is the root of all evil” and you better believe it is so.
The moment you start to hoard money, your entire life changes with money as your god. You can’t even see this change in yourself, let alone recognize it!
Money was not designed to be a commodity, therefore, it lost its purpose as the servant and became your master.
The saddest part of this madness of love of money is that society measures success by how much money an individual has or “makes.” Talking about perversion of values—and virtually nobody is immune from this mental disorder.
It is a mental disorder, a selfish act, and technically a crime to hoard money!
Of course, when money becomes your god, you’ll do anything to satisfy the appetite of your master and “never have enough of it.” The “engine” that drives the love of money is greed and your entire Earthly existence becomes a “runaway train” that cannot be stopped.
Woe to those who are on the train of delirium!
“When all the trees have been cut down, when all the animals have been hunted, when all the waters are polluted, when all the air is unsafe to breathe, only then will you discover you can’t eat money.” (Cree prophecy)
