Work together

Dear editor:
I was in attendance at Monday night’s council meeting during the library building campaign presentation.
My opinion was that the entire council, with maybe the exception of one member, is behind Fort Frances having a new and improved library and technological centre.
I would like to present a different scenario from the one I saw on Monday.
Imagine if the council, as a group, has said to the library representatives, who have worked so hard on this project: “We appreciate all the work you have done over the years to bring this to fruition. Some of the funding that was initially hoped for is no longer on the table, so we will have to work together, as a group, to look at the original budget and see where we might be able to trim some of the costs.
“But, be assured that we are behind this 100 percent, we are confident we can come to an agreement, and build for our community the best library possible for Fort Frances and this district that our budget can allow!”
Instead what I saw were two fractioned, defensive sides of the table.
A new library is absolutely necessary to Fort Frances if we see ourselves as a progressive community. Can’t we work together and inspire pride and excitement over this facility?
