Dear editor:
I feel compelled to respond to the article about churches slowly blessing same-sex unions (Fort Frances Times, Aug. 15).
While it is the last thing in my character to attack anyone, perpetuate hate, and breed disrespect, I feel our generation is owed an explanation for the position held both in the past and present by many.
First, I want to say there are thousands of Christians I have met in North America and overseas who are striving to develop a world view that is founded on a literal interpretation of the Bible. While there are specific references that are understood in a historical context, the principles established in the scriptures are consistent and progressive.
When we see a continuum of thought into the New Testament, we understand there are truths that are not subject to cultural change. Sexual morality, sexual distinction, family, and marriage are not obscure concepts but clear principles taught in both Testaments.
Matthew 19:4 defines all humans created as male and female, and every detailed reference to marriage in Paul’s teaching includes discussion of husband and wife. 1Cor. 6:9, when defining unrighteous as fornicators, adulterers, effeminate, and abusers of themselves with mankind, Paul addresses the church as those who no longer practised such things.
Secondly, the mission of the church has never been to merge with the culture. Paul was met with violence in most places he preached because his message was counter-culture. Culture is failing us and producing a crisis of violence, single-parent homes, and addiction.
The Biblical model of the greatest “family and children service” ever created is a functional mom and dad united for life.
I have given more than 30 years to our community as a Fort High graduate, father of three wonderful children all delivering this fine newspaper, retail manager, pastor, and community volunteer! We have given help to many over the years living in different situations that we do not particularly agree with sincerely loving people while not celebrating everything they do.
Perhaps when all who respectfully disagree with so-called “mainstream” become marginalized as justifying discrimination, we need to re-evaluate who the aggressor is!
