What is a volunteer?

Mckenna McTavish

A volunteer is someone who has no more time in a day than others. They are people just like you and me. Some people may dislike volunteering and some enjoy it. Now whether you like it or not, the world runs on volunteers and that’s a fact. I happen to really enjoy volunteering. I have volunteered for the Emo Food Bank, Emo Motocross Track, Emo Minor Hockey and for the United Native Friendship Centre. In order to graduate Grade 12, we are required to complete 40 hours of community volunteering. I am proud to say that I have already exceeded these hours and plan to have many more by the time I graduate. I am passionate about volunteering because I see firsthand what it does for my community. Seeing the activities our small community has compared to bigger places makes me grateful to have the volunteers we do.

Volunteers are people who want to see others succeed whether it is youth sports, food banks, community events and warming centres, the list can go on and on. Many people assume that they are paid positions when in fact they are people just like you and me who take time out of their busy lives to better others. I have seen lots of people despite their age volunteering. So if you were considering volunteering, now is the time to reach out. There are so many causes or organizations to get involved with. Each one is deserving of your time and effort. Next time you are at a community event, please remember to thank a volunteer they won’t be expecting it but they will be deserving of it. So what is a volunteer? A volunteer is anyone who wants to be one.

As I said, the world runs on volunteers.
