Vote strategically

Will Labovitch

Dear editor:
Greetings from south of the border.
Here in Minnesota, attempts to start a third party movement by the Independence party (a.k.a. Jesse Ventura’s party) have ended in victories for the Conservative-like Republicans due to vote splitting among the Democrats.
This even happened in International Falls as long-term Congressman Jim Oberstar was defeated last November in part because of an Independence party candidate who garnered four percent of the vote.
And two probable presidential candidates have used it to their advantage in Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann.
But Canada has a multiple party system, so use it. The last thing Canada needs is a Conservative majority as seen with Conservative majorities in Wisconsin, where pensions and labour rights to public employees were cut, and in America under George W. Bush, whose policies landed the country into a deep recession.
Therefore, I urge Liberals to support incumbent Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP John Rafferty just as I think NDP voters must support Liberal candidate Roger Valley in Kenora.
I think Ken Boshcoff is a great candidate but now is not the time for vote splitting.
Instead of voting with your conscience, I ask that you accept reality and vote with your head and support Rafferty.
(Signed)
