Vote ‘no’ to MMP

Dear editor:
I write concerning an issue in the upcoming Provincial election that is of extreme importance to Northern Ontario.
This is an issue that is below the radar screen—and one the political parties are not dealing with.
On the ballot will be a referendum question asking us to vote for or against a new form of representation for future legislatures.
This is a Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) form of representation that will see individuals elected in electoral districts, as is the present case, and members elected from a list that is put forth by the various political parties.
This second list will see people elected based on the number of votes each party receives.
The number of electoral districts will be reduced from the present 107 geographical districts to 90 geographical districts. These geographical districts (also called ridings or constituencies) will be based on population, as is the present case.
Currently there are 11 ridings in Northern Ontario. This new system will mean a reduction of ridings in Northern Ontario since they will continue to be based on population and there is no guarantee that the present 11 ridings will be maintained.
There also is no guarantee that any of the members elected from the party lists will come from Northern Ontario. This means our voice at Queen’s Park will be heard even less.
We currently complain about the size of the ridings in the north and how weak our voice is. This proposal, if it is successful, will make it worse.
Is it important that all electors in Northern Ontario vote “no” on the referendum question. This time, more than ever, it is important that all people in Northern Ontario go to the polls and vote in the referendum just to maintain the muted voice we currently have.
The future and the economy of Northern Ontario depend on this.
If you have questions about this matter, I urge you to speak to your elected municipal officials or members of Chambers of Commerce. The future is in your hands.
(Signed),
Michael Power
