Volunteers needed

Dear sir:
We are sure that by now, many of you are aware the teachers at Fort Frances High School–as well a countless other high schools across Ontario–have withdrawn their services from all extra-curricular activities.
This is due to the fact that members of the OSSTF are being forced to teach an extra half-class each year, cutting into their preparation and personal time.
Both the OSSTF and the provincial government have been very vocal about their positions on this controversy but we wish to speak for the group perhaps most adversely and unfairly affected in all of this–the student body.
As members of the Student Executive Council at FFHS, we have seen our own workload increase because of this. From finding parents to chaperone dances to ordering pop and snacks for the vending machines in the cafeteria, the SEC already has taken over a number of activities teachers had volunteered for–with surely more to come.
And it is not just the SEC which has stepped up. Other groups and clubs within the school, including the yearbook committee and OSAID, have tried to keep going without teacher supervision.
We would like to say that the extra work being put in by all involved students at FFHS is a positive example of what the teen population of Fort Frances is capable of. We would like to congratulate all students who have put in the extra effort to step up and get involved to try and solve many of the problems that the school is facing right now.
We also would like to thank the administration, especially principal Ian Simpson, for being very co-operative in allowing us to continue to operate, and encouraging us to do as much as we can. He has put in much extra time to try and get as many activities as possible off the ground.
Outside of the school, some volunteers have stepped forward to help out but we could still use more. There are sports without coaches or referees, and plays without directors. For any activity that takes place in the school, chances are we need someone to step forward and help us out.
If anyone would like to volunteer for any school activities, please call FFHS at 274-7747 and leave a message for the SEC with your name, what you would like to help out with, and phone numbers for both daytime and evening contact.
