The people have spoken

Dear sir:
The ratepayers of the Township of Alberton have spoken. And I believe they sent a clear message to council–they do not want a new community hall built in Alberton.
Although the count was short of the required 50 percent of eligible voters on a referendum, turnout was still above provincial average. Eighty-five percent voted against the new structure.
Meanwhile, the old hall sits there like some sort of icon, with heating and maintenance costs of roughly $9,000 annually and not enough revenue to pay the light bill.
One would wonder, then, why anyone in their right mind would suggest we go in debt for a new hall.
True, the government would reimburse about $90,000 towards the project, which would not cover the cost of septic system and water. Our reserve funds would be depleted and taxpayers would be left with another debt on their hands.
Let this be the end of the debate, and dispose of the existing tax burden (old hall). We don’t need it, either.
Signed,
Robert Gadd
