Thanks for the memories

As I read and reread last week’s Times article on the sale of Sunny Cove, memories come flooding back. Thoughts of weddings, anniversary parties, famile reunions, school year ends, safe grad, church services, teaching canoeing skills and studying wildlife. They are all pleasant reruns of the past. My thoughts themn switch to the future and the youth of today who will not have that opportunity.

Growing up in Fort Frances, lake life and all it encompasses is precious. Sunny Cove is a gem or rare gift, as Ken Perry stated in May 2020 when describing the property. The Kiwanis Club had sold the 28-acre plot to the Town of Fort Frances in 2009 for the tidy sum of $1.00. He went on to say all of our sporting and recreational entities cost money and do not break even, but cam be replaced. All but Sunny Cove. If we divest ourselves of Sunny Cove, that jewel will be lost forever.

Sunny Cove is our only property on Rainy Lake and I wonder if we have done enough to save it. Have we exhausted our ideas and energies to maximize its value? I wonder how many communities in the world would love to have the opportunity we have.

I am thankful for the memories while I hide some guilt for not doing more to save Sunny Cove and polish the gem in our own back yard.

In closing, I would like to thank all Kiwanians and citizens for their contributions to make Sunny Cove such a special place for many years.

Sincerely,

– Terry Ogden
