Support sought

Dear sir:
Fort Frances High School graduation is approaching fast (Wednesday, June 20), and the ceremony and “chem-free” party is on the minds of many of the parents and graduating students.
As two concerned parents, we do not want to see the tradition of a graduation ceremony, followed by a “safe and sober,” celebration come to an end.
We realize the ceremony is the responsibility of the school and we hope this graduation is as memorable as in the past. However, it is our understanding that because the “chem-free” (alcohol- and drug-free) party is an extra-curricular school activity, it cannot proceed without the involvement of the teaching staff at the high school (the dispute between the teachers and the Ontario government is preventing their involvement).
Because we feel the “chem-free” party is an important part of the students’ graduation, we hope to keep it alive by getting the community involved. Time is definitely an issue but we have received many inquiries and offers to volunteer.
Many ideas have surfaced–Extreme games, glow bowling, bands and DJ music, contests, large-screen TVs with movies and/or Nintendo, dunk tank, mock gambling–and all will be considered.
What we need now is the support of the community in the way of enthusiastic volunteers (parents, students, service groups, community members, etc.), sponsorships, and donated prizes.
Let’s make this a great way to end the 2001 high school year for the graduates of FFHS! Please help us so we can carry on with the great tradition of “chem-free” partying.
Our first organizational meeting will be Thursday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at La Place Rendez-Vous. The success of this year’s party will depend on the participation at this meeting. Students are welcome to attend.
