Stop for the kids

To the editor:
One morning last week, on my way to work, there were children waiting at the crosswalk in front of Alexander MacKenzie School. The crossing guard was waiting for traffic to slow down before she entered the crosswalk.
I stopped my car to let the children cross and when two vehicles came through, I waved at them to point out that there were children waiting. The one vehicle stopped to tell me that he did not have to stop.
Sir, I am sorry but you do have to stop. When anyone is waiting at a blinking crosswalk, you have to stop. You can be fined for not stopping. It is dangerous enough for these children to have to cross four lanes of traffic when the crossing guard cannot be sure that everyone can see her.
Although she does do her best to ensure all traffic has stopped.
This has been a problem for a long time. It was a problem when I attended the school in 1981 but it is even more dangerous now with the four lanes of traffic.
I would hope that we could all be a little more considerate to these children and each other in the future.
