Something in the water?

< B>Dear sir:
I noted in last Friday’s Bulletin that John Harrison has been made manager of Abitibi-Consolidated’s mill in Thunder Bay.
There are roughly 50 paper mills in Canada and currently five of these mills, or 10 percent of the total, are managed by people who are from Fort Frances, all of whom achieved this lofty level of success relatively young.
This is no small accomplishment (for comparison purposes, we would have to place 65 players in the NHL to achieve a 10 percent ratio!)
Statistics cannot begin to explain how 10 percent of Canada’s paper mills could be managed by a group from one small community. Perhaps there is something in the water.
A more reasonable explanation is found at the corner of Portage Avenue and First Street East. Three of the four managers–Jim Gartshore, Ian Murray and Lorne Morrow–were all members of the same graduating class, with John Harrison only a few years later.
We, as citizens of this community, should celebrate the success of these former residents, and realize that their success is a direct reflection of our local educational system, our local mill, and our community.
We should be proud.
< B>Signed,
< B>Dave Murray
