Shafted

Dear editor:
In response to the so-called victorious win of our township council in getting the provincial government to “allow” us, the ratepayers and residents of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, to pick up the financial losses of Caliper Lake Provincial Park for the foreseeable future.
The council voted to run this money-losing park to the tune of $40,000-$60,000 a year (projected). Do all residents and businesses know we will be facing more increases in land tax to pay for this?
Also, where in hell does the municipal council think it is smart to go into business in direct competition with its own ratepayers?
What’s next, council? Maybe a restaurant, tourist resort, air base, food store, bait shop, or hardware store—we can’t afford to lose any of them.
How long would you be in business if your losses were a bad as this park; that is, if you don’t have tax dollars to bail you out?!
Yes, the park probably should be kept open—but with provincial dollars, not ratepayers in a small community.
If council thinks we have extra money in the coffers, here’s a novel idea. Give us all a break in tax relief.
Obviously, we must have extra dollars, which does not mean you can just throw it away before the next election or a referendum vote.
Oh, and thanks for keeping the last meeting and vote almost secret, and at a time when a lot of people are gone.
Yours truly,
Merle McFayden
