Senseless rebates

Dear editor:
I am writing in regards to the rebate cheques that were sent out for February. If I understand correctly, the reason for these rebates was because of the increase in natural gas prices.
Well, when I received my gas bill, it had nearly doubled from what it was the month before. But neither my husband nor I receive a G.S.T. cheque, so we were not entitled to the rebate.
Only people who receive a G.S.T. cheque received a rebate.
People who burn wood or fuel, and receive a G.S.T. cheque, got the rebate. Ones on welfare or mother’s allowance received one even though their rent includes utilities (but they, too, also receive a G.S.T. cheque).
Wouldn’t it have been smarter for the government or natural gas company to just put a credit of so much towards anyone’s gas bill.
I know I’m not the only one who thinks this way. But if it’s the taxpayers’ money that’s being given away, then shouldn’t we have an input if some of us are not getting any rewards in the end. I know I sure could have used the rebate, as well as a lot of others.
So maybe before they do something like this again, the government should take a little time and think twice before jumping to the easiest answer.
If they ever wonder why they’re not so popular with the people, they can use this example as a start.
Sincerely,
Tammy McQuaker
