Roe v Wade

Dear editor,

Congratulations to our neighbours south of the border are in order for the overturning of Roe v. Wade on the 24th of June. This was a step in the right direction that ought to be celebrated from coast to coast. I hope that this will serve as a prompt for revisiting and raising the issue of abortion north of the border too. As a matter of fact, we should be one step ahead because abortion has never been designated a constitutional right in Canada. And yet we are one of just a few countries in the Western World where abortion is unrestricted up to the point of birth. Common sense tells us that what is in the womb is recognizable as a baby long before birth. Science is catching up to the fact that the necessary features for designating him/her an individual being in his/her own right become verifiable long before birth as well. And the Bible teaches us that personhood starts at conception. Therefore, “fetus” is just another stage of development in human life and no excuse to deny the little person legal protection. Perhaps the Supreme Court decision south of the border can encourage us to start moving in the direction of becoming more respecting and appreciative of life up here too.

Your’s sincerely,
Philipp Gerber
