Dear editor,
Thank you Knox United Church for having the courage to support gay and lesbian peoples and for calling us to rethink our existing prejudices.
I find it interesting how often scripture has been used to exclude or even demoralize people we do not understand. Whether to justify slavery, condone child abuse, promote racial segregation, keep women from positions of authority, advocate war, or support religious intolerance, scripture has played a key role each and every time.
I’m wondering whether most of us realize that the Bible (you’ll find it in Leviticus) also commands against wearing garments of “mixed fabric”—polyester and cotton, for example—or the planting of two different kinds of seed in the same garden.
Whenever scripture is used as a weapon to prevent another human being from living life to its fullness, this cannot possibly be from God.
The issue is not going away. Maybe that’s why we react so strongly.
I suppose I do take some comfort in the belief that by the time my grandchildren are my age, there will no longer be any reason to have these kinds of conversations.
