Respect the electorate

Dear editor,
The mayor and council were elected because the citizens of Fort Frances put their trust and faith in these people to do what is best for the town.
The passing of a bylaw that would see members of council receive a paid benefits package—in addition to remuneration—can only be characterized as self-serving, arrogant, and greedy.
The citizens of Fort Frances have been subjected to increased property taxes, increased user fees, and the infamous “bag tags” because the town is experiencing financial difficulties. During these times, it would seem only appropriate that our mayor and council would exercise restraint and fiscal responsibility.
It is disgraceful to consider the reinstatement of a luxury such as paid benefits for these elected officials.
What are the mayor and council teaching the children of Fort Frances? That it is okay to increase “loonie” swims to “toonie” swims and to raise the rates for rink time in order to gain benefits for themselves? How dare these elected officials profit on the backs of children and every other citizen!
The Municipal Act 2001, c. 25, s. 224 states:
“224. It is the role of council,
(a). to represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality; . . .
(e). to maintain the financial integrity of the municipality;”
The act stipulates that, as a member of council, you are to “represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality—not your own best interests!
Mayor Onichuk and Couns. Kabel, Gilson, and Wiedenhoeft, reconsider your previous vote and do what is right! Demonstrate the integrity and restore the trust that your community put in you when you were elected!
Respect the electorate and they will respect you!
