Dear editor:
I did not read [MP John] Rafferty’s column regarding the CBC but only [Jason] McQuaker’s “Grab a hammer” response in last week’s paper.
The federal government budget corresponds to spending about $10,000 per person per year. I hope McQuaker’s soul is not tortured by how the other $9,967 is spent on his behalf.
Regarding value, I pay about $40/year, since privatization, on my municipal tax bill for the annoying but necessary letter I get every year informing me what my property taxes are.
Since partial privatization of the electricity supply, I, like most Ontario households, pay about $100-$200/year for the electricity I do not get.
Compared to that, the 365 days a year of radio and television programs I receive from the CBC—for about $33/year—is a real bargain.
In a civilized society, it is necessary for all to contribute to the common good if able.
Unfortunately, there seem to be always persons who know the price of everything but the value of nothing.
