Public education at risk

To the People
of Ontario,
Did you go to school? Chances are, the answer to that question is, “Yes!”
Did you get your education at a public school (Catholic schools included)? Chances are, the answer to that question is “Yes!”
Are you worried about Premier Doug Ford’s proposed cuts to public education in Ontario? Chances are, the answer to that question is, “Nope.”
Have you given any though to what these cuts will do to public education in Ontario? Chances are, the answer to that question is, “Nope. Not really.”
Do you know what the proposed cuts are? Chances are, the answer to that question is, “Nope. Not really.”
Truthfully, I only know the basics. It is all just “political jargon” to me. Something about money, programs, a cap of having 45 students in one classroom. Some people are upset, and some people are not.
Personally, I am upset, and I think that perhaps you should be too!
The cuts that Premier Ford has proposed are, of course, to save Ontario some money or perhaps to balance a budget. After all, he is a Conservative, and that is what Conservatives do, right?
However, have you considered the bigger picture or Ford’s hidden agenda?
The cuts that Ford has proposed are to break our public education system, a system that educated you, your friends, your relatives, your parents, and your children.
How? He wants you to lose faith in our publicly-funded education system because it has been crippled by cuts.
He wants to underfund it, remove programs, under-staff schools, and to create such a negative environment at schools that you will not want to send your children there.
He wants you to have to pay to educate your children.
He wants to take away one of your child’s basic human rights–the right to an education.
Sincerely,
Trevor Bowles (teacher)
