Positive messages

Dear sir:
An alarming percentage of teenagers have contemplated or attempted suicide. Many of these teenagers have severed any contact with the church.
Our young people are really suffering and seem lost. This area (Northwestern Ontario and northern Minnesota) has many young people who are abusing drugs and alcohol.
The teen pregnancy rate also is very high. We only have to look at our local birth announcements to be aware that 50-75 percent are unmarried couples, or single moms.
But there is hope–and that hope lies in us sharing good family values and positive messages with the younger generation. Pointing them towards God is important.
We now have a youth outreach radio station based in International Falls (The Edge/91.9 FM) that challenges the next generation to an extreme walk with God. The station airs announcements that encourage responsible behaviour, and they provide a consistent, positive message of hope, encouragement, and love.
The music is modern/alternative Christian rock.
Surveys indicate that 94 percent of the population aged 18-34 listen to the radio every week. Wouldn’t we rather hear about God’s love, and the hope found through Him and Jesus, that hear the negative messages found in most secular music?
Tonight (Oct. 25) at 7 p.m. at the Falls High School, The Edge (KXBR) is sponsoring a fantastic (and affordable) Christian rock concert featuring three major bands–Skillet, Bleach, and Johnny Q. Public.
There will be a strong message all evening long about living pure lives (not drinking or using drugs), and keeping yourself sexually pure. These are things we, as parents, should be sharing already with our kids.
I, personally, have seen Skillet and they really have a heart for kids–trying to show kids that you can live pure lives and still “be cool.”
If there are parents out there struggling with your teenaged children, I urge you to take them to this concert. I know it is going to touch many lives in a positive way. This is so important!
We need to work together to assure a positive future for this community–and for our young people.
