Dear sir:
I’ve read with interest and appreciation the town’s plans to continue to beautify our surroundings further, in preparation for the World Health Organization conference visitors here in May.
This seems to be an appropriate time to comment on an eyesore that irks me greatly (and possibly some others, as well), with a view to a remedy.
I refer to the “Welcome to Fort Frances” sign in the west end of town—not the beautiful sign itself, but the location where it was erected at a cost of $6,000-plus, I believe.
It confounds me as to why some idiot would choose a spot right alongside a storage/junk yard with a see-through chain link fence, where you cast your eye upon such attractions as old vehicles, pipes, lumber, trailers, etc.
Visitors taking pictures here will really have something to show folks back home, as it’s said a picture speaks a thousand words.
First impressions usually are lasting ones—could not the sign have been placed a few hundred feet one way or the other so that it does not appear to be part of the storage site?
Couldn’t we do a little better than this?
Now, there may be a reasonable explanation for all of this, of which I am ignorant. If there is one, I invite enlightenment.
The twin “welcome” sign in the east end is placed with a backdrop of trees and even in winter, it is pleasing to the eye.
My letter isn’t meant to offend anyone, and I ask that it be taken as constructive so that the west end may become as inviting to visitors as we can make it be.
Signed,
M.J. Bell
