Dear sir:
I am (once again!) dismayed (but not surprised!) at the extremely poor coverage given of our recently-held Rainy River Festival of the Performing Arts.
Each year this exciting event involves hundreds of young people and volunteers from across the district. The participants devote countless hours of practice perfecting their piano, vocal, and instrumental pieces; their speeches; and their dance routines which they perform over a two-week period in Fort Frances.
Scholarships and trophies are won, high scores are earned, and there are many outstanding and high-quality performances.
Other than a minuscule write-up and a few pictures of the final concert, the efforts of all of these amazing young performers went virtually unrecognized by the Fort Frances Times.
Other than a mere mention of the Rose Bowl winners, 29 other award winners did not even rate mention in your article. And where were the pictures of those four very talented young ladies who won the prestigious Rose Bowl trophies (the highest awards given in the festival)?
How disappointing for those girls!
Luckily the Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal published a beautiful photograph and well-written article in their May 7 issue! It certainly is pathetic when one must resort to purchasing an out of town newspaper to read about our local arts news!
The arts community has been asking for many years for more complete coverage in your newspaper. We’re tired of waiting!
Yours truly,
Stephanie Hawkins
