Dear sir:
I am appalled and confused about the recent events that are eroding the democratic process in Ontario and Russia.
Bill 74 gives Premier “Vladamir” Harris the right to fine elected school board members $5,000, dismiss them from office, and prohibit them from running for office again for a period of five years.
A similar bill in Russia gives President “Mike” Putin the right to dismiss elected state (provincial???) governors.
I have always been under the impression that in a true democracy, the will of the people is supreme and that elected officials could only be dismissed for a criminal offence. Are we witnessing the Russianization of Canada or the Canadianization of Russia?
Could you please help me understand this paradoxical situation.
Yours truly,
Robin Freeman
