Dear editor:
Now the truth is known! Depend on us to support charities, depend on us for your employment, depend on us for tax dollars to operate the town, but do not expect reciprocal support from municipal leaders for the successful operation of our businesses.
This was clearly demonstrated by Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown when he made the following statement at a budget meeting last Monday (Feb. 2) discussing the sale of gasoline at the Sorting Gap Marina:
“I know I trailer a boat, too, and I take my jerry cans across the river. That’s just the way it is. And I am not the only one—I have watched all of you guys [council] go across there.”
We know this statement does not apply to everyone and want to go on record as stating that we appreciate the support of residents who do shop locally. We must ensure that “economic stimulus” happens on the right side of the border.
Now that the border shopping policy of our municipal leaders has been revealed, it is a legitimate request to seek a reduction in our municipal taxes, not a possible increase of 4.75 percent.
Upon reflection, one must wonder if it is this attitude from our community leaders and role models that has resulted in seven or eight establishments between the post office and paper mill being vacant.
Thank you, Mr. Editor, and again thanks and appreciation to those who support local business.
Signed,
Mark and Tina Fontana
