Old memories

Dear sir:
Last week, the secret files on the abdication of Edward VIII were released and they bring back memories of 1935.
No mention has been made of the speech the King made in South Wales. Many of the coal mines were closed and the area was in bad shape (most workers unemployed).
The King was shocked, and made a speech promising that he would see that conditions would be improved.
The speech had not been read and approved by the prime minister. Baldwin had the support of the Dominion prime ministers with his objections. The limited monarch cannot make a speech of his own—it has to have the approval of the government.
The King was the head of the Anglican Church, which does not approve of divorce. Mrs. Simpson had twice been divorced.
We were lucky his brother turned out to be one of the best.

Yours truly,
Ron Helliar
