Dear editor:
Being a member of the Robert Moore school council, and getting involved with the breakfast program there over the past few years, has allowed me to get a better look at what goes on in our school and find out areas where I, as a parent, can get involved.
It’s also been a great way to teach my children about the rewarding experiences that come along with volunteerism. Helping out with the Robert Moore School breakfast program, you really get to see and understand the need in the school—from the kids who help out to the kids that really benefit from the program.
It is such a great opportunity for the kids to get involved and volunteer, along with learning about compassion for one another and all the different circumstances we all live with.
With the amalgamation of Huffman School a few years back, along with an ever-growing student population, the costs of the program have almost doubled. It’s wonderful that people are getting on board to help with the financial requirements, but the need is still great from month to month.
I cannot stress enough to everyone that the breakfast program is made available to each and every student. Before I got involved, I didn’t know much about it and was under the impression that my children ate breakfast at home, so they wouldn’t need or want something from the trays.
However, that just isn’t the case, as is the case with most kids. For so many reasons, whether they be financial, early-morning busing, rushing out the door, etc., each and every child at one point or another benefits from the availability of the nutritious foods being offered.
Many organizations and individuals already have expressed interest in helping out in areas such as financial aid, preparing the trays in the morning, doing prep work on the food orders when the food is delivered during the day, baking either in their own homes or as a group in the school kitchen, and helping with fundraising efforts.
With so many people being so busy, it’s lucky that this program takes such little time to help out with.
Understandably, not everyone’s schedules will allow for volunteering in the mornings, but I encourage everyone to find some way to have a role in helping make the breakfast program a continued success for all the children.
