Little League changes

Dear editor:
I am writing to inform everyone of the changes that have happened to Fort Frances Little League baseball in the last year.
The area that our league covered has been consolidated with the International Falls Little League. The Canadian players now will sign up directly with International Falls.
Fort Frances Little League’s role will be to provide good baseball equipment to the Canadian teams.
Now some background information. When we first looked at organizing baseball in our area, the insurance rates on our teams playing in the U.S. league were very reasonable.
However, in the years subsequent to 9/11, the insurance costs skyrocketed to something we couldn’t possibly afford.
We coped with this problem by clearly stating on all our information sheets and registration applications that we had no insurance because of costs. And if the parents felt the need for the player to be insured, they should talk to their own insurance agent.
In the past year, I was informed by Little League Canada that this was unacceptable and, therefore, the change was made to have the Canadian players sign up in the International Falls League.
Surprisingly, there will be no problem insuring them at reasonable rates.
We formed Fort Frances Little League years ago to give the opportunity of playing baseball to any children in our own area who were interested.
The new changes will ensure that they will have the chance to play ball in future years.
Yours truly,
David Sande
