Dear editor:
On the weekend I was at the FFHS Millennium Reunion. I’ve got to tell you I procrastinated about going long enough that it cost me the extra $10.00 for each ticket but I am really glad we went.
If it happens again, I would pay double the amount they charged to go. It was great!
The amount of work that went into this is incredible yet they never missed a thing. The parade, Saturday night meal, decorations, they couldn’t have made it better.
And to think of all the volunteers who did this. You wonder why they would do all this for me and others. Well I think I know the answer to that – these people are dedicated and also proud of their communities and want people from far and near to see this and I believe people did.
If the people in the district decide to do something like this again, maybe some of the rest of us will pitch in and give a hand – not to make it better but to take a little bit of the load off their shoulders.
The thing that really got me was everybody was happy to see everyone else and I believe it was legit.
Now maybe a little bit off topic, but I wonder if our whole district got together and we tried going to the governments as a united body to get whatever we need for our districts.
For example, if one town is to get a school or housing, hospital, factory, etc. if all the towns pushed for this, the government would have much to argue with.
One time not too many years ago, I was at a northern caucus meeting in Toronto, where a couple of ministers told me that in most cases, all they had to do was throw a carrot out there, and in some cases all the towns in that district fought tooth and nail for the carrot while others sat down and discussed what should happen with this carrot.
And if you look around us, I believe this is happening.
Now don’t get me wrong here. When I was in public politics for awhile, I was one of the worst offenders of the principles I have just talked about.
For example, when Fort Frances was getting a new high school, I fought it fervently. I also didn’t think at the start Rainy River should have a hospital and so on. But I believe now that I was wrong to fight these.
I think if we all help each other and get together, we will all prosper, and we will have a first-class district reunion (boy what a party!)
Again to all the volunteers of the Fort Frances High School Millennium Reunion, thanks, you couldn’t have made it any better for me and my wife.
P.S. We went to the 75th reunion and it was first-class also. I think many of the volunteers who did that one are the same people who did this one.
