Dear sir:
This is in regards to the health department’s so-called don’t panic letter to the people of the Fort Frances District not to be alarmed of the E. coli outbreak.
This is a farce. Does a person realize that when they shop at their local grocers, they are also in danger of contracting the deadly disease.
Every time a bagger at a grocery store puts raw hamburger in with your head of lettuce, or any other item that cannot be sanitized, the contaminate is not removed and you are poisoned. Or that when you undercook that juicy burger, you also can be in just as much danger.
Don’t be surprised that if your child does get sick from this, it will take up to four-five days for your local health care provider to diagnose this deadly disease due to the limited abilities of the local labs.
And that’s if they even suspect you or any of your children have come down with it.
And that even if it is reported to the local health department, it takes them weeks to contact the infected person or persons in regards to investigating where it may have come from.
This disease is serious and should have not have been shrugged off by the local health department. This should have been their time to increase awareness to the public.
My daughter is a survivor of this disease and we did live in Fort Frances at the time she had it. The source was never found, or I was never made aware of it.
She suffered for days before the doctor even let us know what was wrong with her. They originally suspected appendicitis. So yes, it can happen in Fort Frances.
Sincerely ,
Leola Mesdag,
Everett, Ont.
