Incomprehensible

Dear editor:
I can’t understand town council’s reluctance to support the objections filed with the Ontario Municipal Board regarding the separation of the dam from the local mill to form an income trust company.
I listened rather intently to the union officers who made a very sound and clear case encouraging council support in filing an objection to the OMB.
The message was clear—separate the dam from the mill and council may be closing the door to the production of kraft pulp and paper in Fort Frances.
Does this kind of decision make sense? If the dam is removed from the mill and made a part of the income trust, the cost of producing kraft and paper here increases significantly.
When the company can purchase kraft pulp from Mexico at $25 less a ton than we can produce it, then we increase the cost by another $45 or so a ton because we no longer have the low cost power of the dam, Bingo, we are out of business!
To further exacerbate this problem, what has the town done to secure the long-term protection of our special electrical rates under the 1905 power agreement? Nothing. . . .
I can’t see myself voting for anyone on this present council, can you?
