In compliance

Dear editor:
In order that local separate school ratepayers are not unduly and incorrectly influenced, I would like to correct several false statements made by John Borst, a trustee with the Northwest Catholic District School Board.
In his letter to the editor in last Wednesday’s Times (“Motion misinterpreted”), Mr. Borst stated “the Education Act requires the board to offer Grades 9-12” and that the NCDSB “is not in compliance with the act.”
These statements are not correct. The Education Act is not mandatory in regard to the offering of Grades 9-12 by a Roman Catholic separate school board.
The act, as written, is clearly permissive in this regard. The board may choose to offer Grades 9-12 if it wishes and if supported by resolution.
Consequently, the NCDSB is in compliance with the legislation.
