Have a heart

Lori McLean

Dear editor:
Recently I received the unfortunate news from two friends regarding the accidental loss of their pets.
These deaths occurred as a result of a motor vehicle hitting them.
As a pet owner, advocate, and lover, I am aware of the consequences that may happen when our pets get loose—and accept total responsibility of the outcome.
But on both of these occasions, the dogs were hit at the edge of their family’s property. The drivers of these vehicles drove on and neglected to stop and check on the status of the dog’s condition.
(Note: these dogs were of medium/large stature, therefore making it difficult for me to believe the driver was unaware of the impact).
Needless to say, these beloved, faithful pets are considered as family members to many people. The thought of losing them—never mind knowing they may have suffered—is very devastating.
The thought that some people can be so heartless and uncompassionate to neglect to inform the owners, alas, driving away without checking the animal’s condition, I find unacceptable and disturbing.
Therefore, I feel the need to submit this letter to make people aware “accidents do happen.” If you can find it in your heart and conscience the huge difference it would make to the families of these pets to have given a few more minutes of your time to inform them of the mishap.
I’m sure, in return, their reactions would have contained much gratitude rather than anger.
Signed,
