Hampton about-face

Dear sir:
I was pleased to hear that Howard Hampton and the NDP now support the proposed Conawapa Dam power project and transmission line. It wasn’t always this way.
Eleven years ago in 1993, it was Howard Hampton and the NDP who cancelled Ontario’s hydro lifeline with Manitoba. That lifeline would have helped the rest of Ontario during the blackout last August.
Howard Hampton boasted about the cancellation of that lifeline, repeatedly suggesting that Ontario didn’t need Manitoba’s power.
The deal that he and the Bob Rae government cancelled not only would have brought much-needed affordable power to Ontario, it would have required a major new transmission line through Northern Ontario.
That would have meant good construction jobs for people in the northwest.
These new lines also could have opened the door to a significant expansion of hydroelectric in Northwestern Ontario—even more jobs for the northwest.
If the project had been given a chance in the early 1990s instead of being scrapped by the NDP, maybe new generating capacity such as the Lac Seul Generating Station in Ear Falls would have been built.
Mr. Hampton: Would you please report on the progress you are making to get the Lac Seul GS project going?
