Dear editor:
Working for the local unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, I have had the privilege of seeing the generous spirit of people in our community–and it is truly inspiring.
For example, the recent “Curl for Cancer” raised more than $10,000 to help find a cure. I am cautious when naming names when it comes to volunteer events–every person who organizes, attends, and participates is important. But Nadine, Wendy, and Cheryl–thanks for your hard work and dedication.
The “Spirit of Christmas,” another wonderful community event for the Canadian Cancer Society, is spearheaded by involved, caring community members–thanks Susan, all the volunteers, and all the contributors! It is a great success because of the great people involved.
Beta Sigma Phi sorority recently completed its annual Daffodil Day drive. For yet another year, the ladies of the local chapter organized the delivery of thousands of daffodils to brighten local homes and businesses. Thanks to Beta Sigma Phi for another great Daffodil Day!
April is Cancer Month, and local volunteers and members of the Canadian Cancer Society have been canvassing your neighbourhood this past month. It is a huge task to arrange canvassers and track receipts for the entire district.
Yet, every year, the community gives more. More volunteers step forward. And we are another year closer to a cure for cancer.
The next event that we are all looking forward to, and that you may have heard about, is the “Relay for Life.” A local group of caring community members have been very busy this winter meeting, organizing, and preparing for an evening of celebration for cancer survivors and their families and friends to be held this summer (June 22-23).
More information on the “Relay for Life” will be in the local newspaper and radio. Please plan to attend–it’s going to be another unique community event and a lot of fun.
The key to all of these successful fundraising events is you–the generous people of our community. You purchase the daffodils and Christmas ornaments, you give money to canvassers, you asked for sponsorship for curling. You are helping find a cure for cancer!
It’s a monumental task, curing cancer. But luckily (for me and the numerous cancer survivors), there are communities like ours that give freely and generously.
Signed,
Todd Hamilton
