Funds needed

Dear editor:
The camp organizing committee of Camp Quality of Northwestern Ontario is on its way to collecting the funds needed to make the first camp for children with cancer–active or in remission–a reality.
This camp is planned for August, 2002 at Camp Duncan on Loon Lake near Thunder Bay, and will be recruiting children from the ages of three-18 from all over Northwestern Ontario.
We would like to thank the following for their support in the last few months:
•Carol Sparks already has donated more than $1,000 from her “Canoe for Cancer” adventure;
•The Sen. Norma M. Paterson Foundation has designated $2,500 from their United Way gift to the Northwestern Camp;
•Gammondale Farms graciously has offered their location for a fall event for 100 people with catering included. This donation is to a value of $1,000 and is greatly appreciated; and
•various individuals have made personal donations.
However, our fundraising must continue as the camp is free to the campers and their families, and a “quality camp” is provided to these children who deserve every reward they can get for struggling with their cancer.
We are hoping for help from service clubs and from local businesses through dress-down days, barbecues, and donations.
As camp director, my commitment to Camp Quality was strengthened in July when I attended the Northern Camp outside of Sudbury as a volunteer staff person. The well-organized, fun-filled week had a caring, invigorating atmosphere.
For the campers, it was a chance to get away from the stresses of their lives with medical staff and companions to look after their personal needs. The staff provided a well-developed and varied collage of activities, along with great food and surroundings.
I travelled there with seven children from Thunder Bay. We know that there are more children in the area from White River to the Manitoba border that can benefit from a closer camp. With your help, we hope to provide it.
