Freedom to say no

Philipp Gerber

Dear editor,

Judging by the last edition of the Times (from 20th May), the response to the decision of the Emo council not to pass the draft resolution submitted by Borderland Pride is increasingly becoming one-sided. Let’s remember that Mayor Harold McQuaker as well as councillors Warren Toles and Harrold Boven remained professional and polite in their reasoning and their choice of words. A public institution with a democratically elected leadership like a municipal government must have the freedom to say “no” to the request of a special interests group if that request involves the municipality’s property or jurisdiction. And Emo council did say “no” by way of due democratic process. I commend Mr. McQuaker, Mr. Toles and Mr. Boven for their consideration for those of their constituents who recognize and affirm the singular importance of traditional heterosexual marriage.

Sincerely,
Philipp Gerber
