Dear sir:
After reading the comments in the Times recently about the possibility of a Wal-Mart store opening in Fort Frances, I would like to make a few comments.
To those citizens who see only the issues of low pay, non-unionized employees, and too much low-priced competition for local stores, I think that a low wage is better than no wage at all!
The people of this area should have the same freedom of choice as Dryden, for example.
As for the so-called sweat shop-produced merchandise, I have purchased lots of “Made in Canada” goods in a Wal-Mart. Fort Frances stores also sell many items that are not from so-called approved sources.
Another reason for west-end shopping would be the woeful lack of Scott Street parking. This has a two-hour limit, subject to a stiff fine. The only way one can find a convenient spot is to arrive prior to 9 a.m.
Also, do these short-sighted individuals not realize that a big store with ample parking would attract people from many places, as well as the U.S.?
People who do not wish to shop in such a store should just avoid it! This is about freedom of choice. Thank you.
(Signed),
Elsie L. Skinner,
Emo, Ont.
