Eyes wide open

Dear sir:
The other day, I was getting my glasses adjusted when a customer made a negative remark about the cost of glasses.
The comment made me uncomfortable yet I couldn’t think of anything to say. But I thought of plenty while driving home.
Every day while driving to work, I am thankful for being able to see well enough to drive. Without glasses, I would be seriously handicapped. I would not be able to drive. I would not be able to work.
If I were not able to walk, I would think nothing of spending thousands of dollars for a wheelchair. And yet, I would prefer, if I were to have a disability, to have anything other than loss of sight.
Many years ago, I was living in Winnipeg and went to an optometrist there. After examining me and my prescription, the doctor spent some time telling me why he was so impressed with my prescription.
He asked me who my doctor was. I said it was Dr. Bob Lidkea. His response? “Oh, of course.”
We have been so fortunate for the last 50 years or so to have had quality eye care here, and I am very grateful.
Two hundred dollars for a pair of glasses? I spent that much for tickets for “Miss Saigon” and because of my glasses, I was able to see the performance.
