Doug Kelly, 52, of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont., passed away at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. on Friday, Aug. 15, 1997.
He was born Jan. 23, 1945 in Sabaskong First Nation to the late Jim and Marion Kelly. Doug had lived all of his life in Sabaskong, and on Sept. 19, 1966 he was united in marriage to the former Lucille White.
For many years, he had guided on the lakes, and worked for the band. Doug also was an active member of the board of directors for Oh-shki-be-ma-te-ze-win Inc. in Couchiching First Nation. He also was a board member of the Lake of the Woods Cultural Centre, and was a respected Elder who was regularly asked to participate in meetings.
Doug loved playing with his grandchildren, and also enjoyed fishing while still in good health.
He was predeceased by one brother, Clarence Joseph Kelly in infancy.
Doug is survived by his wife, Lucille Kelly of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont.; three daughters, Yvonne Geauvreau-Turner and husband, Jeff, of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont., Cheryl and husband, Herb May, of Red Lake, Mn., and Marilyn Goodsky of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont.; one son, Clarence Kelly and wife, Becky, of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont.; and nine grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Richard of Red Lake, Mn., Gilbert Kelly and Phillip Kelly, both of Sabaskong First Nation, Ont.; six sisters, Frances of Red Lake, Mn., Rosalyn Copenace of Thunder Bay, Ont., Phyllis of Kenora, Ont., Mary Kelly of Oshawa, Ont., Janet Kelly of Kenora, Ont., and Linda Kelly of Thunder Bay, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997 at 2 p.m. at Sabaskong First Nation. Deacon Elmer Mainville and Elders Bessie Mainville, Peter Kelly, Fred Kelly and Peter White officiated, with interment in Sabaskong First Nation Cemetery.
A wake was held Monday evening at Sabaskong First Nation.
